A rather hot day, but managed to finish reading a relatively short book in my steamy studio.  The subject of the book isn’t quite directly related to my dissertation, but it introduced many interesting concepts such as the EKC curve, which could come in handy when I start composing my manuscript.

Japan’s Earthquake

The air seems particularly hot and stuffy today.  Went to church, dim sum with family, watered my plants, tended my aquarium, and killed hours at night sitting in front of the TV – a typical Sunday routine.  It must have been years that I have the habit not to do any “work” on Sundays (had to do so deliberately at times).  It was particularly hard to rest today, time seems so much shorter and precious after the devastating disaster in Japan.  Although I know the importance of rest, I just felt like I’ve just wasted so much time…

Continue to pray for Japan, may God be merciful on the Nation, and may we all learn to cherish time and our loved ones.

Found the book that would serve as the starting point for my dissertation, it includes many relevant concepts and suggested further readings.

Meanwhile, I went to the university library to pick up a few more books.  The list of books to go through seems endless, but I really got to start composing the manuscript next week if I were to finish my dissertation before April…

Logged on FB when I got back home, and that’s when I first heard about the devastating earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan.  I pray that God would merciful on the country and minimize the casualties.

There were times when I would romanticize myself living in a remote small town by the sea with my other half, leading a tranquil and simple life.  But is this sustainable?

Re-evaluating my dream life now, I want to live in a relaxed, convivial, and sustainable neighborhood where my friends are at walkable distances.  With well-designed and open “third” places, we would often meet up for drinks/soccer/bball/badminton after work to share laughters and also to vent our pressures and worries.  Over time, we’ll grow to have a strong sense of identity in the community.  Is this possible?  Am I being too idealistic?

More Books

Went to the university library to return some books and to borrow a couple of new ones.  Not sure how many books I need to read before I actually start writing my dissertation…

Books

HKD $6000

As soon as the Government drastically modified the financial budget to give every HK permanent resident 18 or older $6000 cash, the city went nuts!  Politics is particularly LOUD here in HK, especially for someone who’s not politically-inclined like me.  Sadly, one just couldn’t avoid hearing about it.

The news tonight was flooded with footage of the violent protest against the Government.  Many questions popped up in my head.  What’s the role of the Government?  There are so much problems and injustice in the society and the best strategy they have is to simply divide up the money for every one?!

A Happy Day

<<Sustainable Cities in the 21st Century>>Played basketball, watered my plants, tended my aquarium, read a book – my definition of a happy Saturday.  And the day was made pleasurable only while knowing that nothing serious was found on my mother’s MRI report!

<>

<<Cities for a Small Planet>>Glad to know that the vision of a famous contemporary Architect for a sustainable city is that of  high-density and compact form.  Wonder what other visionaries have in mind…

Slowly gaining perspective and enthusiasm for my dissertation…

Mom’s Hearing Problem II

Father took Mom to the hospital today for her scheduled MRI scan.  The report will be out tomorrow, hope it won’t be anything serious.

Meanwhile, mom’s staying in the hospital overnight.  For someone who’s extremely fearsome of sickness and death, I pray that God would give my mother extraordinary peace and a restful sleep tonight.

IT Proficiency Exam – Pass

Checked the result this morning, I passed the IT Proficiency Exam I took about a week ago!  One step closer to completing my degree.

Need to stay focus and work even harder in March, still hoping to finish my dissertation before April…
