Soccer

SoccerPlayed soccer under the Lion Rock this evening.  There were more people than usual, even our pastor played!  I spent a fair bit of time on the sideline dribbling the ball on my own, I can easily spend all day trying to tame the ball, just like my days in UW when the Columbia field was just across the road from my residence.  Some good old days.

An Old Man on MTR

Old Man on MTROn my way to fellowship last night, I saw a middle-aged man on the MTR.  He had this great satisfactory smile on his face while examining the newly purchased basketball, I imagined him thinking about his son’s surprised joyful face when seeing the gift.

Walking up the slope to my church, I couldn’t stop thinking about the time my father bought me a couple of Chinese “dictionaries” before I boarded my flight to Toronto many years ago.  I knew I wouldn’t use those books so I resisted to bring them along.  A big argument resulted.  I still have those books somewhere and I still haven’t read much of them.  Thinking back now, I should have happily accepted them even if I knew I wasn’t going to use them.  I regret for not ‘seeing’ my father’s wonderful smile of satisfaction when choosing the gift for me.

Dissertation

Had spent a few days searching for journal articles that are relevant to my dissertation, a total of 405 articles were found!  I was being very meticulous, trying my best not to let the slightest relevant article slip away.  When I was doing my M.Env.Sci. thesis, papers were passed down to me to study, and I wasn’t at all thankful to my supervisor for the time saved in searching the vast and boundless literature pool!

Would have to skim through the abstracts of the 405 articles later to see how many of those are actually useful for my dissertation…

Mom’s Hearing Problem

My father took my mom to the hospital this afternoon, she had been complaining about the loss of hearing and occasional ‘ringing’ sound. It turned out, for reasons yet to know, one of her ears may have permanently loss 90% of hearing! I was unusually calm. Not a word uttered from my mouth as I don’t know what to say.

How I wish that she could share my belief and receive the exceptional peace in both sickness and health.

Extra Day-off

Clea HelenaGave myself an extra “day-off” before locking myself up for the rest of the week to work on my dissertation.  Went shopping and bought some assassin snails to hopefully control the nuisance snail infestation in my studio’s aquarium.

Played 3.5 hours of badminton tonight, a personal record.  I’ll probably be too tired to leave home for at least a day or two, no excuse to slack off!

End of CNY

The spirit of Chinese New Year has slowly faded away.  The festive pink, red, and gold ornaments dressing the city are quickly disappearing, gesturing goodbye to the most vibrant holiday of the year;  I peeled off the greetings outside my studio door and counted my red pockets, wondering what the Year of the Rabbit will mean to me.

Dissertation

Borrowed a few more books today.  Spent so much time this week searching for relevant journal articles, slowly becoming more clear about my research topic and will start narrowing my search next week.  The research phase is taking much longer than I anticipated…

I’m thankful that I was able to free myself from distractions and concentrate on my research much of this week, will need to stay focused for a month or so longer…

Rough Guide to SustainabilityThe cold and gloomy weather in the last couple of days was particularly suited to do some reading in my cozy studio.  Felt like I’m finally able to switch to full research mode for my dissertation.  I desperately need the concentration if I were to complete it by the end of March as planned.

Had a friendly game of soccer at night with my high school friends.  Big lost!  And I had myself a big “ball pie” to top it off!  Nonetheless, it was good to see and social with friends I don’t see too often.

Cold Gloomy Sunday

Church SketchIt’s a cold and rainy Sunday.  Arrived church early as it was my sister and brother-in-law’s turn to serve.  Went to our usual family dim sum following Sunday Service.  And after that, we went to visit my uncle.  It was my first time seeing him since his surgery, he seemed well and healthy, thank God!

The soccer game this evening was canceled because of the weather, and I’m enjoying the unplanned quiet afternoon in my studio.  No errands to rush through and no immediate worries cluttering my mind, peace.

Back to Work

To-do ListStarted creating my daily to-do list again.  It felt uneasy without a list of tasks to follow each day.  I don’t quite like long unplanned holidays, especially when I know that I’ve unfinished work waiting for me.

Holiday’s over, desperately need to catch up on my Dissertation…
