Busy December

Had been a little busy in the past week designing a mockup for a freelance website project.  Got that finished and had it sent off for review.

Have to start a couple of CNY designs for church next week as they’re due on Friday, that should occupy much of my time this week.  Hope to have that done before getting ready for the holiday season next week.

Will have 3-4 friends visiting from out of town in late December, looking forward to catching up with everyone of them while they’re here.  With the many upcoming church gatherings and the possibility of a big cleanup/renovation of the studio, this December is turning out to be quite busy (or shall I say festive)!

Creative Monday

Did a quick and cheap little renovation in the studio today.  Moved some pallets and boxes of junk away, then covered the space with white curtains, and finally hung all my oil paintings over it.   The studio is now looking a bit like an art studio.

It’s been awhile since I had a Monday night without oil painting class, strangely I don’t seem to be missing it as much as I thought.

Running

Missed 2 weeks of running, but that didn’t stop me from continuing my climb in running greater distances.  Ran about ~12k without rest.

Job Application

With a bit of spontaneity, I’ve sent out my first job application in HK today!  I wasn’t really looking for a job per se, but I came across a part-time research position that seemed like a perfect match for me.  The job nature seemed right (research, part-time), the field (architecture, sustainability) is something I’m really interested in, and better yet, the office is just a 10-min walk from home!  Now if only God would open the door for me…

Lately I couldn’t seem to put my mind off thinking about my career – freelancing, entrepreneurship, and now a part-time job.  And it’s becoming more and more apparent that I won’t be able to do everything well, it would be better to choose and focus on just one thing.  It’s like a box of lego set, you have to disassemble a model before assembling a different one using the same set of pieces, it’s impossible to build two different models simultaneously.   Putting it in a different way, if I can liken life as a marathon race with a single starting and finishing point but with different paths, one must choose a single path to run on for it’s impossible to run on two paths at the same time.

If my analogy is correct, I should choose and focus on one of the possible career paths.  I’ve taken my first step by sending out the job application, may God continue to guide my career and help me choose the path by opening/closing doors.

Creative Monday

IMG_0498With the chalkboard project completed on Sat., I decided to start a new project in the studio today.  Had been wanting to find a way to recycle paper for a long time, and I just thought of an idea today, I’m gonna code name the project Paper Sofa!  Bought some supplies and started the project immediately in the studio this afternoon.

Completed my first landscape oil painting tonight, it seems to look pretty good, I have a hunch that I’ll like my first landscape painting course starting January.  It’s been close to 2 years since I had my first oil painting class, and I’m still very much enjoying it now as it was then.  Will discontinue my Monday night painting classes next semester, instead I’ll switch to Saturday when I’ll do 2 oil painting courses (advanced and landscape) consecutively, should be enjoyable.

Father’s Birthday

Father’s birthday is a few days away, and our family celebrated it early tonight.  My parents had been wanting to see what I’ve done with the studio, and since the dining venue is nearby, I invited my whole family over to take a family photo before heading for dinner.

It was the first time the studio opened up to visitors since my little renovation.  My little nephew immediately went straight to the newly painted chalkboard and started doodling, and the rest of my family were all over the place curiously looking and playing with this and that.  Everyone seems to like what I’ve done with the place.

My family, especially my parents, have always been very supportive even though they don’t really know what I do.  The truth is, I’m not too certain about my career at this point either.  While walking to the dining restaurant, my little nephew asked what I do for a living and what my dreams are, I wished I knew how to answer him.

I’m not sure what work I’ll end up doing in the studio, but it’s important knowing that my family is being supportive, and may God continue to lead me in my career.

Soccer Training

I decided to join my friends to try out a weekly soccer training course in November, and tonight was the last session.  It’s kind of funny, I’ve been playing soccer since primary school and this is the first time I’ve actually received some kind of formal training.  I honestly do feel more fit after the month of training, I guess the weekly running helped too.  However, most of us decided not to continue with the training in December, and I’ll probably follow suit.

I remember something the coach said after one of the games – “If you hustle and play good soccer, people will like to play with you wherever you go.”  It’s true, and that is one of the reasons why I like playing the most popular sport in the world.  Now that I think of it, soccer have always been a part of my life.  I was determined to quit soccer when I made the decision to leave my cleats in Canada ~4 years ago, but a fellowship friend got me into playing the sport in HK again.  I’m not young anymore, and I’m not sure for how long I can keep playing the sport I loved most, I guess I’ll just continue to play until my body call quits or until no one wants to play with me.
