First 3D Print

IMG_0674Did some website work today prior to having a little fun with the 3D printer.  It took less time than expected to setup the printer, I was able to quickly make my first 3D print using a sample print file that came with the machine.

It was a bit of a transformative experience seeing the nozzle maneuver quickly and systematically while oozing thin threads of plastic inside the machine.  The sample print job was a nut and bolt and they actually fit together almost perfectly.  Although there’s much room for improvement on the machine built, print time, and print quality, I think I had just witnessed the future of manufacturing and customization.

There’s much to be learnt in this 3D printing medium…

Creative Mondays?

IMG_0670Hardly did any work today.  Got in the studio this morning thinking I’ll spend the day to design one last cartoon character before going over some website work.  I was surprised that the 3D printer I ordered a few weeks ago got delivered.  I’ve yet to finish the 2D products I’ve been designing for the last few weeks!  May need to design and test 2D and 3D products in parallel…

Spent the afternoon doing a little rearrangement in the studio, added curtains to slightly seal off the storage space so that energy won’t be wasted when the unavoidable air-conditioning days come.  Also tried shopping for a fan, but was futile.

Started my new semester of painting classes at night.  It was good seeing so many familiar faces in class, Monday nights should be pretty joyful this season.

I’m now thinking that I should just go back to my previous Creative Mondays routine?  Will see…

Spontaneous Saturday

IMG_0186Enjoying my spontaneous Saturdays more and more.  My parents usually play mahjong on Saturdays, and without painting classes now, I’m rather free to meet up with my good friend – Ms. Spontaneity.

Spent most of my day in the studio, caught up with some TV shows while doing a little cartooning.  Colored my newly designed character with pencil crayons.  It’s been a long time since I used pencil crayons, brought back fond memories of creating my very first illustrated books in primary school.

PMQ Visit

IMG_0659Had lunch with a couple of old friends in Central before visiting the recently opened PMQ – a historical “Police Marital Quarter” renovated into a hub where artists and designers can rent and setup their studios.  My friend brought up the idea that I should try renting one of the spaces for my own studio.  I never thought about that before visiting the place, but that proposition seemed more and more intriguing the more I think of it.  I can totally see myself using the space to showcase and sell some of my designed products.  I can also be inspired by and possibly collaborate with neighboring artists and designers.  These are some of the things I cannot do at my current studio location.

Briefly talked to my parents about this over dinner, they are very supportive as they always do, they even started thinking if I should hire someone to help me!  I imagined there would probably be a long list of people waiting to rent the spaces and that I may not be able to rent it even if I wished to.  Regardless, I’m thankful for friends and family who seem to trust in my abilities more than I trust myself.

My friend also reminded me about setting goals, and also giving it some kind of deadline.  It’s been a long time since I set any goals for myself, but perhaps this is a good time to do so while I’m rethinking my life’s purpose.

Give me a stock clerk with a goal, and I will give you a man who will make history.  Give me a man without a goal, and I will give you a stock clerk.” – J. C. Penny

KANO

IMG_0658-smallIf not for my sister’s recommendation, I would probably never go into the theatre myself and watch this 3-hour movie.  Thankful that I listened to her, I was inspired and started thinking about my aspirations again.  Don’t you just love films that compels you to reflect upon your life and question your life’s purpose?!

Am I too old to dream?  I suddenly recall this quote “It is never too late to be who you might have been.” – George Elliot.

First seeing the works of inspirational sculptor Ju Ming yesterday, then this inspiration film tonight, this Easter holiday is turning out to be a time to rethink life, a proper time indeed. It’s totally unplanned, spontaneity is becoming my good friend.  Pray that I can be resurrected and live more purposefully after this holiday.

Sculpting the Living World

IMG_0656Was invited by my painting instructor to see an art exhibition showcasing works done by members of the HK Painting Society, enjoyed seeing a large variety of work done in different styles, at different levels (amateur and professional), and in different mediums (oil, acrylic, watercolor, chinese ink,…).

Went to the nearby Museum of Art afterwards to see the current exhibition “Sculpting the Living World” by Ju Ming, absolutely loved it!  I never really appreciate sculptures before, as pretty as they may look, they don’t provide any practical functions.  I take my word back today, sculptures can actually bring people joy, I can see it from the smile on the faces of both the Artist and those who saw his work!  I admire the Artist as much as his work, he seemed to me like a curious elder who never gets tired finding joy in what he does.  The artist has sculpted for ~60 years, and he’s still constantly exploring new materials and philosophy in his work!

Working Holiday

Here I am in the studio working on a website for my church on Good Friday.  After indulging myself with re-learning life-drawing last week, I went back to being an IT guy this week.  Cleared up some website work, but didn’t get to design some cartoon characters as I originally planned.

Oh well, I think I’ll let me mind rest a little in this Easter long weekend and have my creativity resurrected next week…

Saturday Classes

IMG_0182My semester of Saturday classes have finally come to a close today!  Since the start of the year, almost all my Saturdays had been occupied by classes (2 painting classes and 1 rubber stamping class), that’s from 4pm till 9:30pm!  As much as I enjoy oil painting, doing 2 back-to-back classes on the weekend seemed a little too much.

Had to miss a few gatherings/events in the past 3 months because of the classes.  Hoping to open up my Saturdays for a little spontaneity in the next semester, I’m going to switch back to doing my painting classes on Monday nights.  I actually thought about ending my oil painting classes altogether, but I’m almost certain that I’ll miss the weekly 2-hour indulgence with brushes, paint, and canvas – a habit I’ve kept for 2 years now.
