Monday Artist

IMG_2500Made the most out of my Monday Art exploration.  It started with seeing an oil painting exhibition showcasing works from a competition.  It was a big treat for the eyes, I was impressed by the great display of talents from local artists.  While I was at the HK Central Library, I went up to the Art Resources level and skimmed through all the available books of a Canadian wildlife painter I admire – Robert Bateman.  Would I be able to paint landscape/animals as well as him some day?

Time always seems scarce when you’re enjoying yourself, I couldn’t indulge in the books but rather had to rush back to the studio to pick up my brushes and paint and then rush to my evening painting classes.  I was a little frustrated as I was having a hard time with the watercolor painting.  I was hoping to get a little relief with the oil painting class that followed, but I painted the whole class and still couldn’t get the geometry right!  Frustration escalated.  Shouldn’t Art be something to be enjoyed and bring relaxation?  Am I feeling the frustration that many artists suffer from?  Sigh.

Running

Ran about 8k, doubled the distance when I first started running 2 weeks ago! The slightly cooler weather seems to help.

Still a long way from running a half-marathon, but I believe I’m making good progress!

Laser Cutter/Engraver

Have been slightly busy lately experimenting with a low-power laser cutter/engraver, brought back fond memories of the co-op student days working in the laser micromachining lab in downtown Toronto.  That was way back in 2002, never expected the niche skill set would still be applicable after 10+ years!

Running

Increased the training distance a little more and completed a 7K run this morning.  Didn’t seem as dreadful and exhausting as I thought, I actually experienced brief moments of joy during the interval recovery laps.  I suppose it’s impossible to keep a habit or any long term endeavour going if it doesn’t encompass the slightest of joy?!

Running

Although getting up slightly late, I managed to drag myself into my second running practice this week.  Ran about 6K, really exhausted.  I kept asking myself why I signed up for the half-marathon, I think partly because I wanted to prove to myself that I’m completely recovered from my major illness at the beginning of the year, and also partly because I admire persevering athletes, but those reasons didn’t seem to keep me running.  I could only focus on my breathing and on counting the number of laps I completed.  The joy only came at the end when I managed to complete the distance I planned to run.

Slowly incorporating running practices into my weekly routine, hopefully I’ll be able to keep this up until the actual half-marathon in January.

Running

The run last Thursday was too tiring, I had to skip the scheduled practice on Saturday.  Started off this week’s training with a 5K run in the morning, 1K more than last Thursday’s run.

It wasn’t easy, I had to keep telling myself not to give up in the last few laps.  All this mental and physical exercise to complete a measly 5K run (1/4 of a half-marathon distance), will I be able to train up in time to make it on Jan.?!  Glad that I made it through today’s training nonetheless.

Running

IMG_2361Signed up for my first half-marathon earlier, the run date is set on January 17th.  With about 12 weeks to go, I kick started my training this morning.  Noting my last run was already back in June, I took it lightly and ran only 4K, felt exhausted but in a good way.

I’m thinking it might take a miracle for me to train up and run a half-marathon (21K).

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (Isaiah 40:31)
