Sluggish Week

The past week was rather sluggish.  Other than borrowing some books and going to a couple of lectures and a workshop, I had done nothing academically!  Now that I’ve put aside all my freelance work and claimed myself to be a “full-time” student, I feel guilty to be wasting time like this.

Really need to pull myself together and start working on my dissertation full-time next week!

Neon Tetras

Bought a batch of 40+ tiny neon tetras on my way back home yesterday.  A couple of them died, but the rest seems rather jolly in my small aquarium (rather big from the fish’s perspective).  The tank seems so much more vibrant and interesting with these new inhabitants!

Leonardo da Vinci

Went to see an exhibition on the Marvellous Inventions of Leonardo da Vinci at the Science Museum.  MARVELLOUS indeed!  A scientist, engineer, inventor, anatomist, architect, and also an exceptional artist, I cannot think of anyone as diversely talented as Leonardo da Vinci!  I’m most impressed by his sketches and prototypes to experiment with new ideas.

My urge to rent a rundown industrial unit to start a small business grew stronger after this visit.  I really want a place where I can research, design, and experiment with ideas and/or products.  Kind of like a lab, but less formal.  I want to create things that are good for the environment, so the more successful the business becomes, the more beneficial to the environment…

Dissertation

Decided to change my dissertation topic to one that I felt more interested to investigate, glad that it was approved today.  I hope to find out how high-density cities fair in the many facets of sustainability.  Lots to reading and writing in the coming months…

The Borrower Arrietty

Saw the movie <<The Borrower Arrietty>> with my sister, brother-in-law, niece, nephew and his friend today.  It’s been ages since I saw a movie by Hayao Miyazaki in the theatre, it was one of the most awesome movies I’ve seen in the last few years!  Love the way the environmental message was subtlly delivered from the perspective of an “endangered specie” in the wonderfully illustrated world.  Apart from the movie, I had so much fun watching my 5 y/o nephew interact with his friend, reminded me so much of me and one of my best friends when we were young.

Lost my iron ring while waiting for our dinner table, felt like losing another piece of my Canadian memory.  Maybe it’s time that I finally surrender my nostalgia and start embracing a new and full life here in HK…

Flood in Queensland

Just read the story of Noah’s Ark for my daily devotion, images of the Queensland’s flood from the media kept flashing in my head.

I pray for those who are suffering and struggling to stay alive. God, may you remember your everlasting covenant with humankind when a rainbow appears. Please have mercy on your creation.

Green Building

Read the <<Green Building Award 2010>> earlier, nice to see green buildings gaining momentum.  Also skimmed through the BEAM+ documents in the last couple of days in preparation for a workshop starting this weekend, I can see how these certification schemes can suck the life out of architects’ imagination and creativity – luring them to include/exclude features to acquire credits rather than designing with genuine sustainability in mind.  Besides, being certified with top grades do not necessarily equate to green buildings.  Looking at the grading scheme, I can design and construct a building that attains all the 100 credits but have negative ecological/biodiversity impacts on the site?!  (Only one bonus credit is awarded to development with minimal ecological/biodiversity impacts!)

I’m thankful for a quiet and uninterrupted day having personal time in my studio.

Soccer

First time playing 5-man soccer on a rooftop, and first time using my new cleats.  Even more interesting was the fact that we were playing outdoor in one of the coldest nights!  Actually, it wasn’t so bad once we were warmed up.

I’m thankful for a bunch of crazy friends who would play soccer in this freezing weather.  And I pray for those who were injured (I accidentally stepped on a couple of people with my new cleats, not too serious I think).

Cold Night

The temperature is forecasted to drop to 7 degrees overnight in the urban areas, and even lower for rural areas. I’m thankful for a shelter with a cozy bed.

I pray for the less fortunate who can’t afford a shelter or warm clothing. May they find the timely opened emergency shelters. And may God be their refuge.

A Life of Thanksgiving

Saw this presentation by the author of the 1000 Awesome Things blog, reminded me that there are countless little things in life to be thankful for as long as we have a positive Attitude, Awareness like a 3 y/o, and genuine Authenticity to be oneself (the 3As).

I want to practice living a life of thanksgiving, learning to count my blessings everyday regardless of the circumstances…
