Metro Toronto Zoo

Spent a leisure afternoon at the zoo.  Was planning to make sketches of native fauna, but there were only a handful of animals at the Canadian Domain, and most of them could not be easily sketched.  Aside from the bounded animals, there were many chipmunks running all over the places.  I also had a glimpse of a blue jay and a cardinal in the trees, what magnificent birds they are!

My legs are still hurting from the large amount of walking in the vast zoo.

Visiting UTSC

Visited my research supervisor at UTSC, he treated me and the entire research group for lunch!  Really glad to see everyone again.

With the peculiar character of our supervisor, I had many happy and yet productive hours spent in my year of study there.  Happy to see the lab prospering, the world can use more top-notch environmentalists!

Belated B-Day Dinner

Went for wings with a couple of my ex-colleagues for lunch, didn’t get the beer to go with it like ol’ times because I insisted on being a responsible driver.

Had Japanese dinner with my sister, brother-in-law, and 2 nieces.  Even though I’m staying in their basement, I only had dinner at “home” once for the last 2 weeks.  I fully booked myself for dinner because I want to make sure I have a chance to catch up with all my friends while I’m here.

Had seen most of my friends at this point, will probably start seeing “places” for my remaining 9 days here…

30 + 2

20110613-120502.jpgI’m really thankful that my friends remembered my birthday and treated me for dinner, the cake was an added surprise.  I had the feeling that I’m getting too old for cakes and surprises however, just the gathering of good ol’ friends is more than satisfying for me.

Looking back my 30+2 years, I’m much grateful for constantly being pampered by family, friends, and mentors.  Thankful as I am, it’s about time that I forgo a life of “receiving” and start living a life of “giving” to bring more happiness to the people around me.

Dinner with Friends

Had been going out for dinner with friends almost every single night this week.  Met up with a couple of primary school classmates tonight.  I know it’s very rare that we still keep in touch after so many years, so I cherish every moment that we had a chance to meet up.  Casual and happy conversations as always, wished it could be longer though.  Would be wonderful if we could do this more regularly, but I’ll probably have to patiently wait for their visit to HK for our next meeting.

Meeting up with friends here in Toronto made me realize how busy and rushed people are in HK, it’s almost impossible to find someone there to have a meal with you for 3 hours without being interrupted by phone/gadgets/work or other daily errands.

A New Venture

Had a sushi dinner with 3 of my UW classmates at a restaurant I haven’t been to for years.  Then I met up with 2 other classmates for drinks and to watch Game 5 of NBA Finals (Way to go Dallas!).  Too bad all 6 of us couldn’t meet at the same time, but I’m sure we’ll have our chances now that we’re all on board for an exciting venture!

I’m glad that everyone’s interested in the proposal.  Plan to persuade a few more classmates before we start sailing on an exciting journey!  I really think we have something special here…

Crazy Weather

Timmys' Iced CapThe temperature was close to 40 degrees (with humidity accounted) in the afternoon.  Had to stay indoor where air-conditioning is provided, so I went to the mall to shop for a wedding gift for my friend in HK.  Luckily, I found something that’s not “Made in China”!  The Ice Cap tasted particularly good in the hot weather.

The weather took a drastic turn in the evening, crazy thunderstorm and pouring rain caused blackouts everywhere as I was driving to meet a couple of friends for dinner.  Pleasant conversations, but a bit saddened knowing that the fellowship I used to attend is slowly falling apart after I left.

Big Meals

Had a big all-day-breakfast for lunch at around 2pm, I was still not too hungry when I met my ex-colleagues for dinner at 7pm.  The portion for the dinner was even bigger than lunch, I managed to finish it, but my stomach was feeling unhealthily full throughout the night.  The conversations with the couple of colleagues from my first full time job 5+ years ago was pleasant and enjoyable.  We hardly mentioned about work as one of them had left the company a few years back and the other will be leaving for a new job in a few days.  However, friendship/relationship lives on and will be cherished as long as I can remember things.

Everything in Canada seems to be bigger – bigger houses, bigger cars, and bigger meals.  Can that be sustainable?!

North York Civic Centre

Canadian Flag

Bought an Italian sausage from a roadside hotdog stand and spent a solitary lunch hour outside the North York Civic Centre.  Noticed the Canadian Flag and made a quick sketch.  I really didn’t notice their ubiquitous presence until I became somewhat of a tourist to the country now.

Took a stroll around the neighborhood of my highschool days.  Other than new condos popping up here and there, the area seemed like it hasn’t changed too much in these years…

M & J’s Wedding

Attended my good friend’s wedding, that signals the completion of the last mission for this trip.  It was great catching up with my EE2003 friends, especially now that we’re spread all over the places.

With my mission accomplished, my remaining trip can be quite spontaneous.  Will spend more time catching up with friends and maybe also some sightseeing to satisfy my nostalgic self.
