Summer “Staycation”

When I came back from Toronto a couple of weeks ago, I wanted to immediately buy a laptop and kickstart my freelance career once again.  But I didn’t anticipate 2 things:

  1. the laptop that I wanted to buy may get an upgrade very soon
  2. 3 kids (nephews and niece) would move into my apartment this summer, making any solitary work impossible

My new plan is to postpone my initial career plan and extend my summer vacation for a couple of weeks to spend some quality time with my family.  However, I hope to continue my daily devotion and do one sketch a day.

Paintings

Took my young nephew and niece to breakfast this morning.  There was a small art exhibition by a few Mexican artists in the mall, we spent a fair amount of time looking over the paintings again and again.  I was particularly captivated by the series of acrylic paintings of birds (cardinal, blue jay, and a yellow one that I couldn’t name).  The urge to learn oil/acrylic painting once again overwhelmed me.

We went home, and I spent much of the afternoon sketching and doing watercolors…

Studio Sleepover

My 2 nephews and niece moved up and took over my bedroom becoz their apartment is under renovation.  Even though there’s a mattress in my studio, I had never spend an entire night in the room as I insisted in separating work and sleep.  No such luxury anymore, at least not for another 3 weeks!

Home Sweet Home

Arrived HK yesterday when most people were still asleep.  Immediately noticed the hot and humid air when exiting the airport, but thankful that it wasn’t raining.

The long haul flight was exhausting.  I managed to reach home by myself on bus.  Arrived home without my parents noticing.  I took a shower, relief was immediately sensed.  My rooms were exactly the same as I left them about a month ago, I know exactly where everything is, it’s nice to be home!

Toronto Trip

Some sketches from my trip to Toronto in summer 2011…

CN Tower

CN TowerDid what most tourists would do and gone up CN Tower this afternoon, I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of seeing the city from high above.  Stopped by St. George on my way back home to make a quick visit to the building where I used to work for my last co-op term, it was a nice walk along the tree-shaded street under the warm and breezy weather.

This is the second last day for my trip, got to start packing and head to the airport tomorrow night.  Goodbye Toronto, I’ll miss you, and even more so are the friends I have here.  Let me know if you guys ever visit HK, I owe you all a meal!

BTBC

Went to Sunday worship, then lunch, then went back church again for some basketball.  This is the same routine for the 3 Sundays I was here.  In fact, this was pretty much the same routine for most of the Sundays in the 10+ years I attended BTBC.  I know I’m soon going to miss my intimate spiritual home here in Toronto (again)!

Past Family House

Took a stroll around the neighborhood where I lived for 4 of my primary school years.  Walked around my primary school and the adjacent park.  Then I took a seat under a tree shade and sketched my past family house just across the road.  There is a funny feeling visiting long forgotten places and seeing everything so familiar and relatively unchanged.  Things here in Canada don’t seem to change much compared to HK.

Had dinner with my Elim fellowship b/s.  Really happy to see so many people.  I pray that the fellowship’s regular attendance would have just as many people as tonight.  May God continue to lead and guide this fellowship that had shown so much love to me over the years.

Downtown Toronto

Went downtown for the first time in this vacation, it’s so inconvenient to get to the vibrant city center now that I’m staying way up North in the suburbs.  Had a veal sandwich for lunch at St. Lawrence Market, briefly visited GBC (where I learned to sketch), then sat in a small park across the office of my first co-op job and made a sketch.  All within pleasant walking distances!

I used to walk pass the office every time I had my weekly cartooning night class.  I would stare in the brightly-lit office and take a nostalgic journey back to my first co-op term to re-live the vivid and exciting experience of working for a young start-up company.  How I wish to re-create that wonderful atmosphere in my upcoming venture.
