Running

Sometimes I liken running to shooting free-throws – it’s the same repetitive motion and the height and distance from the hoop is pretty much constant, but even though you’ve practiced a million times, the percentage made just can’t seem to improve much.

I ran 10k this afternoon, just barely made it through, and the time was worse than my record last year.  Sometimes I doubt the truthfulness of the famous saying “practice makes perfect”.  Nonetheless, I’m glad I was able to run before moving into my cave, now the running bug shouldn’t come itching while I try to focus and accomplish the impossible this week.

Site Study

Spent a casual afternoon at the HK Science and Technology Park to do a brief study of the site for the architectural design competition.  I really like the atmosphere there, it feels just like the huge campus I spent ~8 months in working as a junior researcher for what used to be Canada’s biggest technology company.  I can totally see myself working full-time in such tech-centric environment.

HK isn’t really lacking infrastructure, but why isn’t the technology industry blossoming like the Silicon Valley?  And I don’t think HK is lacking talents either.  So, what’s missing?  Why is HK’s economy so dependent on Finance and Real-Estate?  How does the society advance by the burgeoning of those two industries?

There are just too many things I don’t understand, but better safe the questioning period till later.  There’s just about 1 week left before the submission for the competition is due, and I still haven’t started on the design.  Yet I’ll procrastinate for one more day before going full speed on this starting Monday!

Uncluttering Life

Finally started rolling out a little website project I’ve started more than a month ago, shouldn’t be too long until I can put a close to it.  Also renewed a couple of my IDs so that I can happily do some traveling in August as planned.  And now that my mother’s home and slowly recovering, I can probably focus 100% of my work hours on preparing for the design competition’s submission that’s due in about 10 days!  And to keep my focus laser sharp, I’ll likely skip some of my regular social activities (soccer, badminton, friends’ gatherings,…) until I finish and submit my design.

Life is like that sometimes, time is inevitably limited, you need to occasionally do some “uncluttering” and clear out the less important things so that you can focus on the more important ones.

But just before moving into a cave and work restlessly night and day, I had a pleasant dinner with some of my UW classmates tonight.  Conversations are always lively and comfortable whenever we meet up, perhaps it’s because we’ve all known each other for 10+ years, we can skip all the superficial chatters explaining our background and why we think things one way or another.  One of them is only in town for internship and will be leaving in mid-August, let’s hope we can meet up a few more times after I move out of my cave.

Mother Returned Home

After more than a week, mother was finally discharged from the hospital this afternoon, I can tell from her gestures that she was really eager to get home.  She’s still not fully recovered and cannot sit or standup for a prolonged period of time, but I feel really relieved just seeing her home and be able to walk on her own.

Thank you for those who took the time to forward me their regards and prayers, and thank you God for Your grace poured on my mother.  Oh Lord, please continue to help my mother recover fully.

An Unusal Week

IMG_0299I’m a rather habitual person, so it felt a little uncomfortable when my daily routine got out of wack since my mother’s accident on Monday.  Instead of going to the office, I decided to work from home again since it’s much closer to the hospital, very little got done however.

Visited my mother at the hospital everyday.  The ward looks too plain and dull, I hanged my recent painting on the wall to spark things up a little, my mother seems to like it.  Saw her getting out of bed on her own yesterday, it was a good sign that she’ll be able to come home soon, I felt relieved.

Feeling quite behind on the architectural design competition submission due in 2 weeks, so far I’ve only read the design brief and have some rather vague idea up in my head, nothing concrete has been done.  Need to work extra hard for the second half of July!

Thank you Lord for letting me witness Your grace in seeing my mother’s condition improve daily, please continue to heal her fully, let the injury not be a permanent damage.

Mother’s Chinese Name

Visited mother at the hospital despite being told by her every time not to do so.  I’m sure she liked seeing us despite what she says, wouldn’t life be so much simpler if women speaks their mind?!  On the sign above her bed that used to say my mother must lie in bed was an additional note that says she may now try sitting up.  Very thankful for seeing improvement on her condition.

I never quite enjoyed listening to my mother talk about her family, but it seemed a little different when it came out from my father’s mouth.  On our way to the hospital, my father told us why my mother’s chinese name has the character “娣”, it was because my mother have 4 elder sisters and her family really wished to have a brother “弟”, but added the girl “女” side after knowing a baby girl was born.

While assisting with the hospital admittance, I found out my mother’s year of birth.  Her age is exactly double mine this year, and it was at my age now (34 y/o) that she gave birth to me!  Interesting.

I was telling my mother that I can’t visit her tomorrow morning and will see if I can drop by the hospital at night, but she reminded me that I have fellowship tomorrow night.  From dislike to acceptance, and to reminding me of my weekly fellowship, I am thankful for seeing a change of attitude in my parents towards me going to church.

Oh Lord, thank you for letting me see improvement in my mother’s condition, and thank you for letting me get to know her a little more due to this accident.  Please continue to help my mother recover, let her be patient, rest well at night, and to be able to come home soon.

Running

Missed my weekly running session for the past weekend due to friends’ gatherings, the running bug was itching, so I went for an early evening jog tonight.  Ran 10k, for some reason, breathing seemed particularly difficult and I seemed to be a bit more tired than usual tonight.

It seemed like an appropriate time to make my legs “suffer” a little, I seem to be slightly closer to feeling the great pain my mother is currently suffering when trying to get up and walk.

Mother seemed ok when we visited her today, but still feeling very painful when she tried to get up.  The doctor said she will need to stay in the hospital for a few more days since she still can’t get out of bed on her own.

Oh Lord, please continue to help my mother recover, lessen her pain and let her sleep well at night.

Mother Hospitalized

Mother injured her spine falling off a chair, she was trying to put away some of my winter clothes.  The first thing that came up my mind was to scold at her for I’ve told her a million times that I’m capable of tidying up my own rooms.  Thank God that I was able to keep my poise because raising my voice would probably make the situation worse.  I just kept silent and worried.

We took her to the hospital, the x-ray revealed that a section of her spine was injured.  She’ll need to stay at the hospital for a few days until she can get up and walk herself, and following that will be a longer period of treatment, regular check-up, and rehabilitation.

Oh Lord, please take good care of my mother, let the doctor(s) examine the injury thoroughly and offer the most appropriate treatment accordingly.  Please lessen her pain and let her sleep well at night.  If You’re willing, Oh Lord, please heal her completely no matter how long it may take.

GIFT Design Ideas Competition

Started looking into an architecture design competition I enrolled earlier.  The competition documents are quite detailed, the requirements on anonymity and confidentiality made the competition seem especially official and fair, and the requirement on deliverables seemed a little intimidating.  I imagined this is rather usual for all architecture competitions, but this is my first time enrolling in one, so everything seems new.  Should be a fun learning experience.

Yes, a good learning experience is mainly what I hope to get out of this competition.  This would also be a good opportunity for me to review and to put into practice some of the things I’ve learnt from my degree in Sustainable and Environmental Design.

The deadline for submission is the end the month, July is turning out to be a fun time for an architecture hobbyist.

July 1st, 2013

Thought hard about joining the July 1st protest to show my disapproval of the current Chief Executive of the city, but chickened out the last minute.  I could have blamed it on the poor weather or the tiredness from running, but I know good well that those are nothing but excuses.  I still very much like to be nothing but a spectator when it comes to politics.  In fact, I seem to like to treat many other things in life the same way, I like to be a bystander to observe and to offer my own explanations without getting involved to alter the situation.

There was no painting class tonight due to holiday, I did a little cartooning instead.
