Hail Storm

NoahThere was a crazy hail storm last night.  According to the news, it was the 3rd time in the last 20+ years that it hailed in March in HK.  It was so intense that the roof in the nearby mall broke and its interior got totally flooded.  Images of the flooded mall looked quite apocalyptic, I couldn’t stop relating them to the scenes in Noah, and the mall itself looks to me very much like the Ark now.

The resemblance was so strong that I had to learn a little photoshop and attempt my first ever derivative work.  I mean no harm, just want to get that image out of my head.

Character Design

Had been wanting to design some cartoon characters for some time now, finally started putting that idea to work today.  I went back to the basics and started relearning how to draw the ideal 8-head tall human figure.  The process of creating a cartoon character is quite intriguing, you can design all sorts of characters with just paper and ink, and the only limit is your imagination.

Went to see Noah with my fellowship b/s in the evening. Despite the movie’s many obvious misalignment from the bible’s truth, I was quite impressed by the director’s fanciful imagination on things that are not clearly described in the bible.  I imagined that creating the movie script is a little like creating cartoon characters/strips, it’s a way of transcribing words/message into visuals in a wildly imaginative way.

Cartooning/Inking Station

Spent a little time this afternoon setting up the cartooning/inking station in the studio.  It’s probably every cartoonist’s dream to have a big inclined table to indulge themselves in pen and ink.  My current setup is rather skimpy and temporary, but should be good enough for now.

Sketching

IMG_0618Spent the last two afternoons sketching.  It’s been a long time since I’ve spent such an elaborate amount of time sketching feverishly, apparently I can still do the art…

JCCAC Visit

IMG_0616There was a DIY fair at the JCCAC this weekend, it was a good opportunity for a social activity with a couple of my primary school buddies – one of them is interested in seeing architectural renewal projects and the other knows a friend who has a booth set up there.  I didn’t go without expectations of my own, I wanted to see if it’s actually possible to make a living doing DIY.  I have no concluding answers however.

One of the friends had to leave early, so me and the other friend went for dinner ourselves.  I congratulated my friend for getting a job offer within just a few weeks of moving back.

My two friends, and also many of my peers, have good stable jobs and are quite successful in my view.  Looking back on myself, I’m one of the few who decided not to climb the corporate ladder and try to make it out on my own.  No stable income, and there’s no guarantee that there ever will, I sometimes question whether I’ve made the right decision to risk entrepreneurship.

Creative Friday

IMG_0613Was occupied by work for the last couple of Fridays and couldn’t allocate an uninterrupted period of time to do creative work.  It was good to be able to put aside my computer and indulge in a little DIY activity today.

Had been thinking over the past, and thinking more frequently recently, would it be possible to earn a living doing DIY work in HK?  Something like Etsy or Tokyu Hands?  Hmm…

Work

Had been rather busy in the last couple of weeks due to some freelance work and personal design projects.  Now that I’ve cleared up some freelance work and sent off some personal design work for printing, my shoulders obviously felt a little lighter!

Had been holding off in starting a venture with a friend, now’s the time to rekindle the entrepreneurial spirit again!  Came across a quote while watching TV last night – “Vision without work is dreaming, and work without vision is just passing time…”  Now’s the time to put my somewhat unclear dream to work, cheers!
