Paycheck

Finally received the first installment of the website project I’m currently working on, it’s been a long time since I’ve received any formal income!  It’s always satisfying to have your hard work being paid off whether it be late or not.

With this money, I’m more confident about my plan of setting up a small web business to earn some bread money as well as making R&D investments.

35th Birthday

Gave myself a day-off and visited the Studio Ghibli Layout Designs exhibition in the afternoon.  It was amazing seeing the thousands of sketches from the many familiar animated films I had watched over the past, I can only imagine the time and effort it takes to produce a couple of hours of animation.

Had dinner with my family for an early celebration of Father’s Day as well as my birthday.  Went for some drinks with a couple of old pals after dinner, it’s always a joy to chat and catch up with them.

Thankful for a simple birthday celebration with some leisurely time for myself as well as spending time with family and friends.

Soccer

20140612-004714-2834709.jpgWent to my alma mater in the afternoon to sit in on a meeting about a possible website project. While I was there, I checked about using their library service as an alumni, I really loved their cross university library system in which I can borrow books from any local university, but apparently, alumni can only borrow books from their own university. Bummer.

Played soccer in the evening. I haven’t played for a month or two due to my ankle injury, it feels good to be on the court chasing after the ball again. Didn’t feel any pain at all on my ankles tonight, so I think I’m pretty much recovered and can fully enjoy sports again! One of my old friend joined the game tonight, felt a little like the good old primary school days when we would be kicking the ball almost every recess, lunch, and after school. Good times.

World Cup will be starting tomorrow, I pray that there would be peace while the whole world chases after the Brazuca. Let not economics, politics, or violence ruin one of the greatest games on Earth.

Creative Monday

Decided at the last minute to skip my painting class in the evening. Shouldn’t be a problem as I’m one class ahead, it might even be better now that I’ll be on the same page with everyone else again.

I had a bit of fun with 3D printing today. I downloaded, edited, and then printed some connectors to construct a huge buckyball using simple toothpicks, it’s the biggest one I’ve ever made. I probably started my fascination for buckyballs since I was a kid trying to draw a soccer ball, it seemed amazing to me that flat pentagons and hexagons can be joined together to form a 3D sphere. It actually still amazes me now.

20140609-000934-574027.jpgParents were out for a dinner banquet, I decided to go for a movie on my own. Watched a movie that had been on for quite some time because a few of my friends recommended it.

It was based on a true story about a Reverend whose 4 yr old son had a vivid heaven experience while being operated on the surgical bed. The Reverend himself didn’t know what to make of it, it was truly a test of his own faith.

To be honest, I find the movie a little boring. But I got carried away by the simple small village setting, the sceneries of blue cloudy sky above miles and miles of crop fields dotted with sparse cottages, the clear night sky in which you can marvel at the millions of stars with your naked eyes… Wouldn’t life be so much simpler and beautiful? It would be like a glimpse of Heaven on Earth.

Non-Work Saturday

Finally broke my streak of working in the studio on Saturdays. Had been a little busy with a relatively big website revamp project over the week, so it felt especially refreshing to spend the day away from the computer.

Played badminton with my friends in the afternoon, my ankles didn’t feel pain anymore, I think I’m 99% recovered from the soccer injury a couple of months back. Joined another group of friends for BBQ in the evening, it was a relaxing night filled with joy and laughter.

Mai Po Night Tour

Joined the night tour at Mai Po this evening.  It was a good trip away from the city, the last time I saw such a gorgeous sunset was in Hawaii last summer.  I know, I really should get out of this city more often.

Work Saturday

Seems like all my Saturdays in May were spent in the studio. I prefer being alone in the studio than be surrounded by crowds on the street.

Hoped to get some work done, but was stuck with an issue the whole day. I have been trying to set up a version control system on EVE so that I can properly track all the changes I’m making on my current website project, tried installing many software but couldn’t find a solution before leaving my studio at around 11:30pm. I recall my first co-op experience back in 1999 working for an internet startup, there was this one night I tried setting up a webserver and ended up staying overnight alone in the office. ~15 years have passed and I’m again staying at work till late at night trying to setup a webserver, but this time I’m attempting to establish an internet startup of my own.

Continued my endless trial-and-error routine after getting home, and I’m happy to finally find a solution and properly setup my computer so that I can do some serious coding next week!

Creative Monday

10353111_10152424350284214_8641194563576252972_nWill probably get busy with I.T. work starting tomorrow, so I wasn’t going to let my Creative Monday easily slip away.  I did some cartooning in the afternoon before my evening painting class.  I was very focused during class because I wanted to finish off the second painting of the term.  This is the first painting I completed on my own without following the instructor’s instructions.  The painting turned out ok, so I’ll qualify myself for graduation. =)  A couple of my classmates were quite amazed that I could finish the painting on my own, one of them even took a photo of me (not sure why).  This is actually the first time I see myself painting, I can be so ignorant of others when I’m concentrated.

Went back to the studio after class to finish off the cartoon I started in the afternoon.  It was about 11pm when I finished the cartoon and went home.  I think I’m now prepared to put behind my art endeavors for the rest of the week to focus on the serious I.T. work that’s waiting for me.
