Earth Hour

Earth hour, I figured I’ll spend the time contemplating and write up a post for my somewhat neglected journal (just checked, my last blog post was way back in early Feb.).

Not a lot has been happening with me since the beginning of 2019. In terms of work, I’ve been busy transitioning back to doing digital fabrication after a long detour in art and other miscellaneous stuff. Recently, I’ve been designing and making lots of things including a giant construction crane using bamboo skewers and 3D printed joints. Feel very alive when I’m designing, experimenting, solving problems, and crafting things with my hands. It feels right and I’m confident that I’m aligning my studio work back in the right direction.

I’m not abandoning my seeming innate interest in Art just yet. I’m still keeping up with my weekly Tuesday calligraphy class, my interest for the art form didn’t diminish but seem to grow ever stronger since starting the first class about 3 years ago!

I also hoped to get back into running regularly again, but the track I’m accustomed to has been under renovation since the beginning of the year. Will check back in April again and hopefully be able to restart the healthy exercise habit.

Spiritually, I was able to keep up with my daily devotions. Not a big challenge as I am not following an annual plan to read the whole bible like last year. So instead of reading 2 or 3 chapters daily in chronological order, I now just follow the daily devotion guide and read 2 or 3 random verses. Like many things, I suppose quality is more important than quantity.

Have been wanting to ask the girl I like out on a date since I returned from Toronto in September, but she seemed busy like most ppl in HK. After so long of not seeing and talking to her, I just don’t know how to even start a conversation now. Don’t know how this relationship will turn out to be, but I still trust that God will find a way to bring us together if it’s meant to be.

I’ve probably been babbling way too long here. Will try to write more but shorter entries in the future. It’s good to spend time gathering and jotting down my thoughts once in a while.

First Art Purchase

In my somewhat long adhoc journey exploring the art world, never have I purchased any piece of original art… that is until today.

I was in TST to see an art exhibition in which one of my old oil painting friends was showing a few of her watercolor paintings. I stumbled across two very different Chinese calligraphy demonstrations before and after the exhibition. The first one occurred inside the Cultural Center foyer in which a (likely well-known) Chinese art teacher was inking in cursive script (行/草書). He was surrounded by so many spectators that I could only catch a glimpse of his demo from afar. I didn’t see him finish the demo but I could hear overwhelmingly loud clapping hands while I was admiring the nearby exhibition of him and his students.

I went to see my friend’s exhibition afterwards.

After leaving the exhibition and on my way to family dinner, I stumbled upon a street artist who is also demonstrating Chinese calligraphy. There were relatively few spectators this time and I had no problem finding a good spot to watch the demo in front. On a handwritten note, the artist described himself as a calligraphy enthusiast without hands and that we can donate whatever amount if we appreciate his artwork. But wait, calligraphy without hands?! I realized finally that the artist was missing all his fingers as I intently watched him demonstrating. He wrote with great concentration with both hands holding on to the brush. He first inked the letter 佛 (Buddha), it was apparently a commissioned piece, one of the spectators put some money in the can, appreciatively took the artwork and left. I was still marveling at the whole situation as the artist took a new piece of paper and started inking again. He inked the letter 愛 (love). It wasn’t a commissioned artwork this time, he simply put it aside and was readying to start a new piece. It took me only a couple of minutes before I decided to ask the artist for the finished artwork, he shyly said yes and thanked me with a hardly distinguishable voice.

And that was the story of my first ever purchased piece of original art!

Year of The Pig

Got really bored binge watching “How I Met Your Mother” at home for the first 2 days of CNY holidays, I decided to go back to the studio to finish cleaning it up (while continuing the binge watching).

Finished cleaning up my desktop and the art area to ready myself for a new year of work, which I spent some time planning and writing them down as my New Year’s Resolutions.

This new year is kinda significant (in my mind at least) as I’m turning 40 and entering my 10th year of returning to HK.

Oh Lord, I’m not sure if my plan is good in Your eyes, but I trust that whatever turns out to be will be best for me according to Your plan. So Lord, I guess I’ll simply ask that I could see You more clearly and follow you more closely this year. Help me stay away from sinning and let Your light shine through me.
