Origami

I’m guilty of chopping down trees for mindlessly printing paper for reading.  It’s just too tiring to read long papers on the screen!

To ease my guilt, I usually save up the printed pages and use the backside as scrap paper for doodling or draft work.  In order to use up the piles of unused scrape paper, I decided to take up origami and have spent most of my time tirelessly folding paper in the last few days.

Mini UW Class Reunion

It’s a rare occasion that we have 2 of our classmates back in town at the same time, so we had a mini UW reunion on Wed. night.  The dinner served an additional purpose for me, it’s the start of a series of farewell meals I’ll be having with friends whom I wouldn’t see as often after moving back to HK.

Acrylic Painting

I bought this inexpensive Acrylic Painting for Dummies kit a few years ago when I was taking night classes that explored many different art media.  However, I didn’t play with the kit until today.

Acrylic paint is quite versatile, it’s like oil paint when thickened but it behaves more like watercolor when diluted.  I followed the tutorial inside the kit to create my very first painting!

My First Painting

Indoor Plant Installation

There are 2 tiny windows in my basement.  I utilized the natural sunlight from one of them for my row of succulent plants, and to utilize the other one, I created an indoor plant installation using scrap resources I found while packing my stuff earlier.  The stuff includes extra plant pots, my remaining potting soil, unused grass seedlings, scrap acrylic panels, throwaway CDs, leftover modeling spray paint, decorative sand, glue, and tape.

I’ll revisit their germination progress before I leave for HK in 2 weeks…

Cardboard Plant Pot Holders

Inspired by Frank Gehry’s Wiggle Chair, I constructed a row of plant pot holders using recycled cardboard.  Since the cool temperature in the basement does not provide the optimal condition for my succulent plants, I’ve also created a pipe using Pringle’s chips containers to pump warm air from my PC through the row of plants.

I really like the idea of creating beautiful and useful objects using recycled waste materials.  The flickr album of the project can be found here.

Uncluttering – Part 2

It’s been an intensive week of uncluttering.  I’ve been procrastinating about packing and clearing out my stuff for the longest time, the built-up stress even cost me a few sleepless nights.  But I’m now happy knowing that I’m about 75% done.  I’ll probably leave the rest of the packing till 1-2 weeks before I leave Toronto.

I’m hoping to take a little break in the coming 1-2 weeks to do some creative projects, farewell my friends, and visit places I’ve been wanting to go…

Before uncluttering…
After uncluttering!
After uncluttering!

Uncluttering

After spending a couple of weeks of slowly archiving the stuff I can’t throw away because of their remembrance values, my lair looked as messy as the time I first moved in all my stuff about 2 years ago.

I plan to spend this week uncluttering and clearing out stuff I don’t need anymore.  Let’s see how much I can unclutter in a week…  This is the photo of my place before uncluttering:

Models

I became somewhat of an avid modeler when I moved back to Toronto in Grade 12.  High school was not too demanding here, so I could easily spend days, weeks, or even up to a month on a particular model.  I was very much a perfectionist back then, and I could easily be irritated by the slightest imperfection.  The hobby became the cause of frustration rather than the joy of leisure.  But over time, I’ve learned to overcome the frustration by giving away my finished models to friends…

It’s been many years since I last completed a model.  There are still 6-7 untouched models in my archive that I wish to complete someday.

Soccer Balls

Balancing out the feminine stuffed toys, I also have a collection of balls (mainly soccer balls).

I loved playing soccer ever since I was little, it’s the sport I enjoyed playing the most.  I still remember the times when I couldn’t stand the studying in my undergraduate years, I would go to the soccer field across the residents and spend hours alone dribbling the soccer ball.  My attachment to the soccer ball did not end after graduation.  For the two jobs I held after undergraduate graduation, I always kept a soccer ball under my desk to make those idling times less boring.

Some of my friends know my love for soccer balls and actually bought me a few as souvenirs!  I sure did like them more than postcards and key chains.

Stuffed Toys

As a 30 year-old guy, I ashamedly have a small collection of stuffed toys I can’t throw away.  Snoopy and the Cat (I don’t know his/her name) next to him traveled all the way from HK and made it in time to my undergraduate graduation.  Other than those two, I actually bought a lot of the small ones as souvenirs because they were irresistibly cute.
