Marathon

Finally submitted my assignment last night, I’ve spent much of my time this week working on it.  Relief!  I chose one of the buildings for the upcoming Shanghai World Expo 2010 as the case study, so the end of the assignment is actually a new beginning for my research of the much anticipated Expo.

While my Canadian friends are getting all excited with the Winter Olympics (Go Canada Go!), HK people caught a bit of a fever over the local marathon race today.  I thought about joining the 10k run, but chickened out when I knew the race begins at some crazy early hour.  Completing a marathon race is one of those crazy things I wish to achieve before I die, but I can’t quite put my mind into it.  Would it be too old to start training at the age of 30?  With my current shape, I doubt that I can even complete a 5k run!

For the meantime, I’ll be content with shooting some hoops…

A New Start

The Chinese New Year has quickly come and gone.  Today is just a few days short of my half-anniversary of returning to HK, nothing much had been accomplished or changed, I’m still my old unmotivated self with lots of bad habits intact.  Subconsciously, I was hoping the change in environment would help me start life anew, but I had spent much of the time reminiscing my life in Canada.  I felt like sleep-walking most of the time, drifting through life without a soul…

I desperately want to change.  I hope to mark this day (20100222) and say farewell to the short CNY vacation as well as my life-long detour of a purposeful life.  I pray that God would cleanse me and use me, and help me to lead a meaningful life that’s worthy of His praise.

Chinese New Year 2010

It must have been more than 10 years since I last spent CNY in HK.  The atmosphere is definitely more festive and vibrant compared to Toronto.

I haven’t seen the restaurants this quiet, my home phone this busy, and my family this happy since returning to HK.

What are the odds of having CNY and Valentine’s Day on the same day?

My Little Nephew

My almost 5 yr-old nephew is one of those kids everyone adores.  I’m not sure when and how I started to have these informally scheduled play sessions with him on weekday mornings from 11-12am, but I enjoy them as much as he does.  It’s quite interesting to see how kids learn and think.

I don’t quite remember what I was like when I was 5 years old, it seemed so distant…

Must be the damp, misty and Spring-like weather today, I felt like daydreaming all day.

Solitude

The sound of light rain falling on trees and window, the sound of water rushing through a stream, and the occasional chirping of birds are all that I can hear while I compose this entry in my studio on a rainy Sunday afternoon.  Solitude.

Greening My Studio – Part I

Walk into an electrical appliance store in HK and I’m sure you can easily find a vast amount of indoor air purifier options.  This to me reflects how badly polluted the air in HK is.  I don’t like the idea of electrical indoor air purifier.  Since most electricity is generated from burning coal, those devices would indirectly cause more air pollution outside, and with that you’ll probably need more indoor air purifiers.  A vicious cycle indeed.

Why buy an air purifier when some simple indoor plants are more than adequate for the job?   They don’t harm the environment, and they’re much more pleasing to the eyes too!  You don’t need to trust me, just take a look at this video.

RIP: Badminton Racquet

(Dead) Badminton RacquetI killed my racquet playing badminton!  I’ve only used the racquet for a few months, and I only realized how much I’m attached to it when it’s dead.  It’s like that for a lot of things, we never realize their true values until they are gone, forever.

Quitting badminton actually crossed my mind, but I know I can’t, at least not yet…

Sustainable Energy – without the hot air

Completed the recommended reading for a course.  The book is great as it answered a lot of the questions I’ve always pondered.  It’s free too!

Looking at some of the graphs from the book, I realized that I’m now living more sustainably in HK compared to Canada. This is an unintended good thing.

It kind of make sense as I now:

  • walk a lot more and take public transit rather than drive
  • don’t need any heat at home during winter
  • don’t need to turn on lights during the day as I no longer live in a basement

Corrugated Cardboard

Cardboard DesignsI’ve spent much of the last few days cutting up cardboard!  My mom must have thought that I was going insane or something. =)

With a little spare time after the busy January, I decided to transform all the corrugated cardboard I’ve saved up from my lair’s furnishings into something useful, things like document holders and boxes for the shelf.  The process was quite tedious and mundane, but there is a sense of satisfaction seeing something useless being transformed into something useful.

If designers can think of more creative ways to integrate packaging into actual products, we would have less packaging waste…
