Greening My Studio III

Miniature Stone GardenSpent much of my last week designing and assembling a miniature stone garden for my studio’s window shelf.  Due to my lack of care, a lot of the bonsai plants given during class already looks like they’re dying with much of their leaves lost.  Hopefully, with more tender care, they’ll be revived and bud out new lush green leaves.

30+1

Turned a new page in life at the age of 30 when I decided to move back to the place of my birth.  Now at 31, I wish to gain a more clear picture of my career path and take my very first step towards it.

Mini Bonsai Class

Went to a mini Chinese bonsai hands-on class this afternoon. The tutor gave each of us about 10 unshaped infant plants to experiment with. I plan to use them to transform the window shelf in my studio into a miniature zen garden next week (hopefully)…

June 4th Tiananmen Massacre

I knew I was getting old when I started to follow economic news, and even older now that I began to read about politics.

Today marks the 21st anniversary of the June 4th Tiananmen Square Massacre.  Not to speak of politics, I could barely do my multiplications table back then.  But it shocked me when I watched a video of the news report recorded on June 4th, 1989, I just couldn’t understand why a government would kill thousands of its own citizens in any circumstances?

I wanted to stop by Victoria Park tonight to witness for the first time the annual candlelight vigil, but it was just too crowded to get in.  Maybe next year…

Home Sweet Home

Came back from Shanghai late last night.  The Would Expo was not as spectacular as I imagined, perhaps I had too high of an expectation.  It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience nonetheless, and I did manage to see some awe-inspiring architectures.

Glad to be home, it’s through traveling that I realize where home is.

Pre-Expo

Luggages for My Shanghai TripAll packed up for my trip to Shanghai for the World Expo tomorrow.  I don’t seem to be as excited as I used to be after being imbued by the intensive media coverage.  Enthusiastic nonetheless as I’ve never been to the World Expo before, and this year’s theme of “Better City, Better Life” will definitely give me some inspiration on my studies…

Shelf Doors

Added some coverings for my studio’s shelve.  Like many of my DIY projects, it took much longer than I initially planned.  But it’s worth the effort, I can now use it to display whatever images I can dream up.  Nice furniture should be made to last, the ability to re-skin it to suit different contexts and environments should improve its adaptability and prolong its life expectancy.

I used the world map as the first printed image.  Although I’m not a big traveler, I kind of fell in love with cartographic art when I took my first GIS course a few years ago.

I’ll have my chance to see the world in a highly concentrated fashion when I visit the World Expo in a few days…

Greening My Studio II

Much of my time is inevitably spent staring at the computer screen, I’m quite sure that wouldn’t benefit my eyes one bit.  I’ve planted a row of plants in front of my monitor hoping that the various shades of green would bring some relief to my straining eyes.  They should also help cleanse the indoor air when photosynthesis kicks in during the day.

This is my continuing quest to green my studio, an attempt to bring the outdoor indoor.

L.A.M.P.

Much of my time this week was spent on setting up my L.A.M.P server.  I couldn’t think of any better way to reuse the many old and abandoned desktops lying around at home.

With a platform to do some elaborate testing, I’m one step closer to starting my website design business again…

DIY Clock III

DIY Clock IIIDesign no. II kept failing because of the long minute handle, so I decided to re-design the DIY Clock in my home office (again).  Replaced the handles with transparent strips cut from plastic folders, and tipped them with post-it bookmark strips for a hint of primary colors.

It looks almost as though the blue and red squares are floating in mid-air.  I’m quite satisfied with this design.
