Home Sweet Home

Came back from Shanghai late last night.  The Would Expo was not as spectacular as I imagined, perhaps I had too high of an expectation.  It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience nonetheless, and I did manage to see some awe-inspiring architectures.

Glad to be home, it’s through traveling that I realize where home is.

Pre-Expo

Luggages for My Shanghai TripAll packed up for my trip to Shanghai for the World Expo tomorrow.  I don’t seem to be as excited as I used to be after being imbued by the intensive media coverage.  Enthusiastic nonetheless as I’ve never been to the World Expo before, and this year’s theme of “Better City, Better Life” will definitely give me some inspiration on my studies…

Shelf Doors

Added some coverings for my studio’s shelve.  Like many of my DIY projects, it took much longer than I initially planned.  But it’s worth the effort, I can now use it to display whatever images I can dream up.  Nice furniture should be made to last, the ability to re-skin it to suit different contexts and environments should improve its adaptability and prolong its life expectancy.

I used the world map as the first printed image.  Although I’m not a big traveler, I kind of fell in love with cartographic art when I took my first GIS course a few years ago.

I’ll have my chance to see the world in a highly concentrated fashion when I visit the World Expo in a few days…

Greening My Studio II

Much of my time is inevitably spent staring at the computer screen, I’m quite sure that wouldn’t benefit my eyes one bit.  I’ve planted a row of plants in front of my monitor hoping that the various shades of green would bring some relief to my straining eyes.  They should also help cleanse the indoor air when photosynthesis kicks in during the day.

This is my continuing quest to green my studio, an attempt to bring the outdoor indoor.

L.A.M.P.

Much of my time this week was spent on setting up my L.A.M.P server.  I couldn’t think of any better way to reuse the many old and abandoned desktops lying around at home.

With a platform to do some elaborate testing, I’m one step closer to starting my website design business again…

DIY Clock III

DIY Clock IIIDesign no. II kept failing because of the long minute handle, so I decided to re-design the DIY Clock in my home office (again).  Replaced the handles with transparent strips cut from plastic folders, and tipped them with post-it bookmark strips for a hint of primary colors.

It looks almost as though the blue and red squares are floating in mid-air.  I’m quite satisfied with this design.

DIY Clock II

DIY Clock III kind of feel lost now that school is finished and summer vacation has officially started.  The emptiness wasn’t as tranquil as I thought it would be.  I seriously need to find a new goal.

Watched a couple of documentaries related to design (i.e. Objectified & Helvetica), then spent much of the other time modifying my DIY clock.

Summer Vacation Starts Today!

Submitted my paper on “Mitigating Air Pollution with Architecture in Hong Kong” today.  There were at least 3 months for me to work on it, but I barely did any work until the last two weeks, all the other time were wasted on procrastination.  I don’t know why I just can’t get myself to start and finish things earlier…

It’s a relief nonetheless!  School won’t start again until September, and I have the next few months free to pursue some of my long endeavors – visit World Expo, setup my home office, get some freelance work going, summer reading, join a fellowship at church…

Street Food

Street Food in Tsing YiTook my mind off my paper tonight to play some badminton.  Afterwards, we stopped by this soccer court in Tsing Yi where a hugh bamboo structure was set up for the traditional Chinese opera.  They had this every year when I was living in TY in high school, but I just didn’t expect the tradition to live on after so many years.

I gave in to my craving and had some street food, my first time since returning to HK.  It was delicious, and no stomach ache followed too!  There’s something I like about eating food the uncivilized way, I think it’s the whole freedom and unrestricted experience.  Also, the experience is much enriched by the company of friends chatting and joking around freely without worrying about anything…  It certainly brought back some good memories of my high school years in HK.

Let’s Move On

The Happiest Bits ExhibitionThere is this MINI showcase in the mall close by, I couldn’t resist to close in and take a peek at it (this is out of my character as I have a tendency to avoid crowds).  After returning my leased car about a year ago, the vivid image of my hand gently holding the round-topped stick shifting gears still occasionally pops up in my dreams.  I don’t know if it’s the car, the manual driving, or just the freedom of the whole driving experience, but I kind of miss it.  I didn’t know it was this addictive until now.

It’s been close to 8 months since I returned, and I still often have these nostalgic feelings for Canada – the environment and the scenery of the 4 distinct seasons, the small but warm church, the people who know me well, and the simple and free lifestyle.  Sigh, I’ve really spent too much time reminiscing the past since I returned, I need to learn to live in the present.  Let’s move on!
