Grass

Sat in on a seminar about Grass today.  Didn’t realize we humans depend so much on grass until now – more than 45% of our diet’s calorific value comes from it (rice, wheat, barley,…)!  Furthermore, grass can be used to make paper, herbal medicine, oil, furniture, construction materials, etc.  And the fastest growing plant that can rise up to 3 feet in a single day is bamboo, also grouped as the grass family (Poaceae).  Such miraculous plants!

Also saw a video about a famous scientist from the university who dedicated much of her life in plant research.  She was still regularly prying into her lab’s microscope in her 90s!  A true inspiring model to look up to!

Parent’s Return

Parents bought me a hotchpotch of Belgium chocolates from their European trip, will try and see if they can live up to their reputation of being the world’s best chocolates!

I’m thankful that they returned safe and sound.  I’ve been praying for their health and safety every night before I went to bed.

Last Supper

Parents will return from their 10+ day European trip tomorrow.  The freedom and tranquility of being home alone will inevitably cease tomorrow evening.  I seized the opportunity and treated myself with abundant forbidden food for the last time tonight!

Slightly drunk from the 2 beer while I’m writing this post.  This half conscious state of mind feels rather familiar, romantic, and incredibly addictive…

When asked about my farewell gift from my Elim Fellowship’s b/s, I requested The Message – a contemporary English translation of the best-selling book of all times.  After bringing back this gift with me to HK for a little over a year, I’ve finally finished reading it from front to back!

Now is the time to exercise my sluggish body and start putting The Word into actions.  Oh God, please cleanse, mold, and use me for Your work, may everything that I do and say be of goodness in your eyes.  Amen.

Change of Season

Woke up this morning feeling particularly refreshed after a restful sleep!  Haven’t been sleeping too well ever since I supported the “no air-con nite” last week and stopped turning on the air-con before I go to bed.  But the air temperature last night was just perfect for a therapeutic deep sleep!

Took a walk to the nearby mall for breakfast, the cool breeze affirmatively signaled the arrival of the much eagered Autumn season.  After endured the melting summer in HK, I can honestly say that I hate summer here!  I long for the gloomy and chilly winter days when I can spend more time in my cozy studio, with the door closed and disturbance minimized, and with the air-con turned off and its associated guilty feeling vanished, to focus and indulge in more productive work…

Tsing Yi

It’s Chinese National Holiday today.  Went back to Tsing Yi to play bball with my highschool friends.  This is one of the rare occasions that I went back during the day rather than night to play badminton.  With much time to spare after the game, I forgot about my fatigued body and took a long leisurely stroll around the neighborhood where I grew up.  Not a lot had changed, many of the neighborhood shops (barber shop, clinic, stationery shop, bakery, general store,…) were still there.  I navigated the neighborhood with ease as though I’ve never left that place 10+ years ago.  I doubt that this sense of belonging to a community and strong attachment to a place can be bought in any of the luxurious private housings that are selling like hot cakes.

Played soccer, badminton, and basketball this week.  My muscles are calling quit.  Desperately need some rest.

Learned from the book that Construction and Demolition (C&D) Waste is the major contribution to landfills and reclamation sites in HK.  This waste stream can be vastly minimized through better planning, design, construction, and maintenance of architectures.  Unfortunately, I find this particular book to be bloated with common sense and lacking much of the details, perhaps I was expecting too much from a “guidebook”.

Cardboard DIY Crafts

Frank Gehry’s Wiggle Chair had a major influence on me.  The creativity and craftsmanship involved in transforming a common discarded material into something so gorgeous and yet functional is simply ingenious!

I’ve been experimenting a great deal in upcycling corrugated cardboard into plant pots, file holders, iPhone stands, boxes, etc.  Yet my greatest encouragement in indulging such meaningless work was when my mother and brother started bringing me useless cardboard without my request.  I’m brought up in a typical Chinese family that doesn’t exchange direct verbal compliments between family members, so their actions can only be viewed as a sign of approval and appreciation!

greenArchitectureSpending much of my time these days reading books.  Sometimes I feel guilty for leisurely spending my time while most of my peers are working hard to make a living.  It seems almost as though I’m slowly building up a debt on finishing up my fair portion of meaningful work on Earth.

I could have continued my freelance work while I’m studying part-time, but I don’t think I can do both things well together.  I want to dedicate my last academic year to learn as much about my admired field as possible.

Sunday Service

Hardly missed a Sunday Service for the last year or so, but this morning’s sermon by a guest pastor was the most powerful I’ve recieved for a long time.  The message was a bit scattered, but it got me to reflect upon my life.  God lavished so much on me, but never have I used anything that was entrusted to me on His work.  Life is about giving, not receiving.  What’s not being utilized will be taken away.

Oh Lord, please forgive me for not being a faithful steward.  Please cleanse, mold, and use me for Your work.  And let this not be a mere ephemeral thought.  Amen.
