Payment Received!

Finally received payment for a freelance project I’ve pretty much finished by the end of last year!  Still very happy to have received the reward of my labor.  A happy moment for a not so diligent freelancer.

Told my parents during dinner that I’ll pay for our regular family dim sum this Sunday.  I know it’s not a lot that I’ve earned, but you can’t really put a price tag on happiness, can you?!

Oil Painting Class

Picked up my painting from last week, honestly think it looks pretty good for a first attempt, and I was all hyped up thinking I was a natural talent.  But after tonight’s class, I’m thinking it may very well just be beginner’s luck that I painted such a nice orange…

I had a really hard time painting a green apple, especially the thin stem. I kept on adding layers of paint to cover up mistakes and then had to rush through the end to paint the background.  Didn’t have time to take a picture, it probably didn’t worth the effort anyway.

Hope I’ll have a better knack of it next week, I still believe in hard work more than natural talent.  Practice makes perfect!

Mother’s Day

The small orchid I bought my mother last year didn’t last long, so I got her one of the hardiest plant this year – “Mother-in-law’s Tongue”!  It was free too as it was branched out from a plant I got 2+ years ago. =)

Finished grooming the many plantations in my home studio this weekend, another part of my big renovation project completed!

Desktop Plants

Took a stroll around Flower Market this afternoon, the area was busier than usual, probably becoz it’s Mother’s Day tomorrow.  Bought 6 different species of succulents to replace the row of unsuccessful plantations on my desk.  The previous attempt failed likely because the single species of sedum required more light than what my desk can offer.  Let’s hope that at least one of the 6 species of succulent chosen this time can thrive in relatively low light levels.

Cleaned up my desk after potting the succulents, another small part of my home studio remodeling project is now complete!

Cork Shelf Doors

Was late for fellowship tonight as I was caught up with finishing installing the last row of shelf doors in my home studio.  Took me a while, but glad that one part of my big studio re-modelling project is finally completed.

Debugging CRM

After doing a little dEEsigners’ work, I helped a friend debug a CRM system he recently took over.  I couldn’t help but remember the time I was working for my first job after my bachelor’s degree.  It was a small company that makes CRM software for the automotive industry.  We were so short of people that everyone had to be involved in software development, testing, debugging, and support.  Things always seemed urgent and there were even times when we had to spend the night at the office rolling out updates and doing final testing.  We sometimes call ourselves firefighters, I even joked about redecorating our office as a fire department with rescue slides, water hoses, and everything! =)  Some good old days, memories always seem so much rosier.

After 8-9 years since that first job and I’m now supporting CRM again?!  Let’s hope my friend can find a person more appropriate for the job soon.

First Oil Painting

Had my third oil painting class tonight.  After 2 classes of introduction to the studio, the medium, and color theory, I finally had the opportunity to paint my first ever oil painting!

The result looks unexpectedly good.  It really felt natural to have the paint brush in my hand, must be the result of my occasional (virtual) practices at times when I imagined myself to be a painter.

Looking forward to my remaining 9 classes…

Dining Out

As expected, I was out for dinner from Mon. to Sat. this past week, probably a personal record since I returned to HK!  Had the chance to catch up with a couple of old friends on Thursday, one of them just got married not long ago and the other one will be having his wedding banquet in a couple of weeks and so called the dinner gathering to drop us the “red bomb”! =)  I’m actually quite thankful becoz who knows when we’ll ever have the chance to meet up otherwise.

Finally started working on our first dEEsigners’ project this past week, hope to pick up the momentum again after a long break.  Really need to pick up the slack and kick start my career again…

Joined my fellowship b/s for the first time to catch a movie (The Avengers).  I enjoyed watching the individual super hero movies, but it seems a little bit too much when you put them all together in one single movie.

Didn’t have dinner at home again tonight, I was out for dinner on Mon. and Tue., and I’ll be dining out on Thu. and Fri. and maybe Sat. as well.  Mother kept on nagging me for not eating at home and drinking her soup.  It’s not my fault, somehow everyone just wanted to socialize in this one week!  The fact is, I had been eating out for years and stayed considerably healthy, I don’t see the harm of not drinking my mother’s soup for just one week!  Of coz I couldn’t say that to my mother, good thing I have this little online space to let off some of my steam.

Finally started on our first dEEsigners’ project today – installed WordPress and started mocking up the theme.  A friend called me tonight asking me to consider a full-time programming job (I completed a Flash game for their company a year or so ago as a freelance project).  I politely declined the offer as I’m quite determined to try starting up a business of my own at this stage.  Nonetheless, I’m happy to know that I still have skill sets that can help me earn a living.  But who knows, I might just fail in entrepreneurship and be forced to find myself a full-time job later.

Oil Painting Class

It was a hot and muggy day, thick dark clouds were hanging on the sky, but it just couldn’t quite squeeze out a drop of rain.  Wished it would just let it pour and cool down the city.  Couldn’t quite get myself to do any productive work in this weather, ended up wasting an afternoon surfing the web in my sweltering home studio.

Went to my 2nd oil painting class in the evening, picked up my cheap painting tools and was taught briefly about color theory.  The instructor demonstrated painting of an imaginary landscape, really got me excited, looking forward to actually paint my very first oil painting next week!

I’m loving the painting class so far, a deep relief was sensed the moment I stepped into the studio, I could put away (for an hour or two) the worries of life and simply be absorbed in art.  I recall this wonderful feeling when I was taking life-drawing classes many years ago.
