The 2013-14 Budget

The 2013-14 Budget for HK was released yesterday, I actually spared the time to search and skim through the report for the first time ever (a good sign of me getting old).  Something troubled me about the Budget, in it were only 3 short paragraphs about “environmental protection and conservation” and only a merely $15 billion (out of $440 billion in total) will be spent on it.  Doesn’t it make simple sense to invest more on the environment (e.g. reducing air, light, and noise pollution) and let everyone living in the city benefit?!  And what’s more troubling to me is that no one actually questioned about this, is everyone satisfied with the environment in HK?  I know that economy is important, but what’s good is money if the environment is making you sick and suffocating?

On a personal note, I’ve finally rolled out the changes for some of my previous freelance work today, well on my way of clearing all my freelance work!

Website Finally Relaunched!!

This site had been down for more than a month, initially due to a problem at the server end, then holiday mood took over and I just rested and never picked up any website work until recently after the CNY holidays.

While spending the time to migrate this site to a new web host, I updated the site’s layout design and added a new category to showcase works of my new found hobby – oil painting.

Year 2013 is off to a slow start for me, but I seriously rested more than I should, really need to get back to work!

Oil Painting Class

Completed one of my most satisfying piece of work tonight!  There are still lots of room for improvement, but the result looks encouraging enough that I want to continue practicing and seek further improvements in this ever more enjoyable hobby of mine.

10K Run

Temperature rose above 20 degrees yesterday afternoon and I decided to go out for a run.  Haven’t ran for weeks, a bit out of shape, I stopped running after 3k.  Thought about giving up and head home, but it was still early, so I found a place to sit, rest, and watch some youngsters play soccer.  After resting for about 1o minutes, I decided to try running again.  Amazingly, I was able to finish the rest of the 10k run without stopping.

Life is like that sometimes, you spend all your energy striving aimlessly, but without a goal or purpose, you would easily give up.  A little rest and a little time to clear your mind may be all that’s needed to recuperate and finish the race.

Now seems to be the right time in life for me to rest and to take a little breather, to think and reflect upon my past while planning for the future.  This is one of the bible verse that kept popping up in my head these days – “For we’re God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”  (Ephesian 2:10)

What’s God’s purpose in me?

Freedom

Sometimes in life there are these little things that are not urgent, has no apparent deadline, and you just don’t want to spend time on.  Ironically, because of a promise you’ve made, you just can’t seem to focus on more pleasurable things until those dreadful tasks were completed.  That is exactly what it felt like for a little freelance web programming project of mine.  Other than my social times (badminton, fellowship,…), I had been keeping myself busy in the last few days trying to complete this freelance work.

Worked pass 2am in the morning and finally uploaded the changes for testing this afternoon, my burden seemed to have lightened instantaneously.  Freedom – something that seemed so distant even during the past holiday is finally back!  I hope to spend some time in the next few days to do some soul searching, to think and to plan for 2013.

TTMSSPC – Red Packet Design

Red Pocket Design

Designing the red pocket last year was my first and happiest experience in serving my church.  I was thinking about passing the wonderful experience to a new professional designer this year, but she’s too busy to take up the design task.

Was given only 2 days to design it, sparked an idea that would let me update the design relatively quickly but still make it an improvement from last year’s design.  Sent off the design for approval, hope the idea will get passed, otherwise I would need another rare spark of inspiration.

Creative Mondays

Went out for an early lunch today, followed by a quick walk at IKEA and some book browsing at a bookstore before heading home.  Started working on an “urgent” design project for my church before ending my day with oil painting class.

My creative Mondays is becoming more routine, and life seems to be slowly getting back to normal again after the holiday.

Receipts

Not too sure why I kept all the purchase receipts of 2012.  The sheer volume testifies the consumerist nature in our society.  I wonder how many of those receipts are from purchases of things I NEED rather than things I WANT.

If I’m ever going to make resolutions this year, one of the items should be buying less of the things I WANT.
